Puzzle · plays in your browser, no download
The two-by-two cube, unfolded flat. Three faces turn, and that is enough. The stars are a measured distance from solved — four turns, eight, twelve — not a guess.
Where it comes from
The two by two cube, the small brother of the one everybody has in a drawer. Being small is what makes it worth playing: the whole thing is known, every position can be reached, and nothing has to be learned by heart to solve it — which is not true of the big one.
How to play
- Six buttons, three faces. U turns the top face, R the right one, F the front one, and the mark after the letter means the other way round.
- Three faces are enough because one corner never moves — the one at the back, bottom, left. Everything else can be brought home from there.
- The cross is the cube unfolded like a box: the top face above the front one, the bottom below it, and left-front-right-back in a row.
- Your score is how many turns you took. The fewest is what gets remembered.
What makes this one different
This cube is completely known: there are 3,674,160 positions and the farthest one is fourteen quarter turns from solved. So the stars are a measured distance and not a guess — four turns, eight, twelve — and the game checks the distance before dealing you one, because shuffling twelve times usually leaves you closer than twelve. Three faces are enough to solve it, because one corner never moves.
