Hop

Where it comes from
1981: the arcade was made of things to shoot at, and along comes a game where you shoot nothing. You cross a road, then a river, and the only verb is a hop.
What keeps it good forty years later is that the two halves work in opposite ways. On the road the traffic kills you and the gaps save you; on the river the water kills you and the logs save you. Same hand, same hop, two opposite instincts: whoever crosses the road without thinking drowns in the river.
How to play
- Tap to hop forward, or swipe to hop sideways or back. One square at a time.
- Ride too far and you go off the edge, which is the same as the water.
- You keep your lives between crossings. Lose them all and it is over.
What makes this one different
On the road what moves kills you; on the water the gaps drown you, so you have to be standing on a log, and the log carries you along until it carries you off the edge. Three stars changes one number and it is the only one that matters: the gap between one obstacle and the next becomes two squares instead of five.
Cross the road, rest on the middle bank, cross the water, reach a nest at the top, and do it as many times as the level asks. You keep your lives between crossings, so a good run is worth protecting — and riding a log too far is the same as the water.
